Another new collection comin’ at ya! I am offering up fresh work at a quick pace these days.
I have been sawing and hammering and sanding until my fingers go numb, and that’s because the shops will be closed for most of May and June.

For some of the recent collections, my studio was a whirlwind of work, hurriedly turning ideas into metal.
The moonstones were a collection like that. Not part of an annual collection, so I wanted to create as many Snow Moon pieces as I could. Because once they were gone, that would be it for a very long time. So I spooled out long hours in the shop on that collection, pulling stars down from the sky at 2:00 a.m. and infusing February moon dust into silver.
But then other collections slowly came to life, tiny motes of light flickering from the corner of my bench, waiting for the moments in between when I would reach for them. And this collection was one such tiny flame.
Worked on through the dark days of winter, while heavy thoughts were on my mind.

Those that have been with me for a while will know how drawn to Latin phrases I am. I took a few years of Latin in school, and phrases will often burble up from my subconscious.

The air has felt so heavy this past year. World news is grimmer by the day, people are struggling, and hatefulness is endlessly rewarded with riches and power and attention.

And that’s when this little motto came into my mind, “ad lucem” which means “to the light.”

People interpret this in many ways. For some it is a reminder to turn to faith and spirituality in times of trial. To others it is a call ever forward, to improve and better oneself continually, to reach for intellectual enlightenment. As such, it is a common motto for schools in Europe.

To me, it is a reminder of goodness. Like Mister Rogers said, “Look for the helpers.” For every shadow there is a flicker of light, and for every act of evil, there is one of selflessness or resilience or pure goodness.

It feels so easy to be consumed by despair, to sink into pessimism, to allow the cold night to nestle under the skin.

So these pieces are reminders to look “to the light.” To turn to the helpers, move into hope, and create a bit of light for others. A way to remember that during dark times one must find a bit of brightness, either within or without.

The “Ad Lucem” necklaces and rings are made from radiating flourishes of sterling silver and hessonite garnets with bellies full of light.

Inscribed on the insides of each ring and the backs of all the necklaces is the Latin phrase “Ad Lucem” which means “to the light.”

A reminder during dark times to find a bit of brightness, either within or without.

And that’s everything that will be part of this weekend’s release! It is a relatively modest collection with no subsequent parts. A brief flicker for you to catch.
